It is a little bit to say that the Transformers saga suffers from a real engine failure. Released in the summer of 2017, the fifth film of the robotic franchise reached peaks of visual and scriptural improbabilities. It also proved that the director Michael Bay definitely had nothing to do and it was high time to put the Autobots and Decepticons in the closet. But it was bad to know the Paramount Pictures studio. The Hollywood major announced in the wake of a derivative film centered on the character of Bumblebee, friendly yellow sidekick Optimus Prime, but the personality undeveloped. If the project was not very interesting at first glance, everything changed when Travis Knight,Kubo and the Magic Armor (one of the most beautiful animated films of 2016), decided to tackle this new opus, indoors since December 26. Result: the director blows a breath of fresh air on the saga by offering a light blockbuster and perfectly calibrated for the holiday season.
Far from the travels of time and other swarming events of Transformers 5 , Bumblebee offers a simple and effective story, which leaves room for wonder. As a prequel to Michael Bay’s entire pentalogy, the film is set in 1987: Cybertron, the Transformers planet, is at war and the Autobot Bumblebee is sent to Earth to set up a base. But the yellow robot is in bad shape and loses memory after a clash with a Decepticon. Taking the form of a Volkswagen Ladybug, he will eventually find refuge in a garage in a small seaside town in California and will be discovered by Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld), an 18-year-old teenager who feels bad about herself after her father’s death …
Family film and “teen movie” more than blockbuster survitaminé, Bumblebee privileges a classic Hollywood story, where a girl will befriend a creature from elsewhere. As such, the film has many similarities to ET the alien : if the brown alien of Spielberg’s movie served as a catharsis to the young Elliott to heal him emotionally from the trauma caused by his father’s departure, the Yellow Transformer will also to impose itself as an outlet for Charlie, and allow him to accept the death of his father and reconnect with his family. The latter also offers some nice characters, the little brother karateka not so daredevil on the front line.
In a daring and action-packed introduction of 15 minutes, Travis Knight achieves what Michael Bay did not do in five films: adapt the animated series Transformers without fuss. The design of robots and the planet Cybertron is colorful and faithful to the cartoon of the 80s, the film even going to reuse the famous mechanical sound of Transformers when they change shape. Bumblebee himself has never been so endearing, at once naive, clumsy, but always so confident. Exit Shia LaBeouf’s cabotinage and the insipidity of Mark Wahlberg , this opus of the saga finally finds a sympathetic main character, embodied naturally by Hailee Steinfeld (the young Mattie in the western True Grit ).
Despite his good will and several successes, the robotic feature film suffers however a rather large soft belly, as well as some scripting facilities. Several shots of “teen movies” (like the popular blond girl from high school who is a real bitch with the main heroine) could have been avoided. We will also forget the anecdotal role of wrestler John Cena in gruff military, who never manages to impose his presence on the screen. But, at the scale of a saga as heavy as Transformers , Bumblebee is nonetheless a good entertainment for young and old where you do not stand out with a stinging migraine. Not enough to make a jaundice after a hearty Christmas.
